What Descript is
Descript is an audio and video editor that works like a document. It transcribes your recording, then lets you edit the media by editing the text: delete a sentence and the corresponding audio disappears, or type a word and it is synthesised in the speaker's cloned voice. That single idea removes most of the timeline work from cutting interviews, podcasts and screen recordings. Around it sit studio-quality recording, filler-word removal, multicam switching, green-screen and studio-sound effects. Overdub and voice cloning let you fix a fluffed line without re-recording, provided the speaker has consented. Projects sync to the cloud, so collaborators can comment on the transcript rather than on timestamps. The limits are precision and format: frame-accurate timing and complex visual effects are harder than in a traditional editor, and transcription errors propagate into the edit until corrected. For teams, the deciding factor is usually how much of the work is talking rather than motion design.
Best for
- Cutting interviews and podcasts from the transcript
- Removing filler words and silences in one pass
- Screen recordings with generated narration fixes
Not ideal for
- Frame-accurate editing and complex visual effects
- Recordings where transcription quality cannot be checked by hand
Pros
- Editing text instead of waveforms saves hours on interviews
- Filler-word removal and studio sound are built in
- Cloud projects make review and comments straightforward
Cons
- Transcription errors become editing errors until fixed
- Weaker than a traditional editor on fine timing and effects
- Voice cloning raises consent and disclosure questions
Pricing in detail
The free plan covers the editor with a limited number of transcription hours per month and exports at reduced quality. Paid plans are billed monthly or annually and raise transcription hours, add 4K export, watermark removal, more seats and advanced features such as overdub and studio sound. Usage is metered by transcription hours rather than by export, so long recordings consume a plan faster than short social clips. Check the hourly allowance before committing to a podcast schedule.
