What Claude Cowork is

Claude Cowork is Anthropic's agentic mode inside the Claude desktop app, launched as a research preview in January 2026 and now available on paid Claude plans. It brings the agent architecture of Claude Code to knowledge work that is not coding: you point Claude at a folder, describe the outcome, and it plans the steps, runs sub-agents where the work allows, and produces finished files. Sessions run inside an isolated virtual machine on your own machine, so it can read, edit and create files in folders you have granted without uploading them first. Common jobs are sorting and renaming a cluttered Downloads folder, extracting line items from a pile of receipts into a spreadsheet, drafting a report from scattered meeting notes, and building a deck from source documents. Connectors reach Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, Notion, Figma, Asana and Linear; Claude in Chrome handles browser work, and screen control is a last resort. A plan is shown before files change, permission is asked per application, and any step can be stopped.

Best for

  • Analysts and researchers turning long documents into summaries or spreadsheets
  • Operations teams cleaning up shared folders and extracting data from scans
  • Organisations already on Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 or Slack

Not ideal for

  • Anyone who needs a free tier — Cowork has none
  • Mainland China teams that require in-country data storage

Pros

  • Handles long, multi-step document work with a plan you can review first
  • Connectors reach Google, Microsoft and Slack services directly
  • Runs in an isolated virtual machine with per-application permissions

Cons

  • Paid plans only, and agentic runs consume capacity faster than chat
  • Data is processed outside mainland China, which rules out regulated work
  • Still a research preview, so behaviour can change between releases

Pricing in detail

Cowork is not sold separately. It is included from the Pro plan upward, priced at US$20 per month, with annual billing around US$17 per month. Max plans at US$100 and US$200 per month raise the usage allowance by roughly five and twenty times, which matters because agentic tasks consume far more capacity than chat. Team plans add per-seat administration, self-serve seat management and a Slack connector; Enterprise adds SSO, audit and usage analytics. There is no free tier and no standalone trial — the free Claude plan does not include Cowork.
