WorkBuddy vs Claude Cowork: A 2026 Comparison

Short answer: pick Claude Cowork if your files live in Google Drive, Microsoft 365 or Slack and the job is turning a folder of documents into something finished. Pick WorkBuddy if you work inside the Tencent stack — WeCom, Tencent Docs, Tencent Meeting — or want one agent that also writes code, builds slides and publishes mini programs. WorkBuddy has a free tier; Cowork is paid-only. The split that decides most choices is ecosystem and data residency, not raw capability.

Where WorkBuddy is stronger

WorkBuddy's advantage is reach inside the tools a Chinese office already has open. Since October 2026 it sits in the side panel of WeCom, so a task can be handed over from a chat window and the finished file comes back in the same thread. It also reaches Tencent Docs, Tencent Meeting and QQ Mail, with connectors for Feishu, DingTalk and Canva — which removes the export step between them.

The second advantage is scope in a single agent. One task can end as a Word document, an Excel sheet, a PowerPoint deck, a chart, a design image or a code change. That removes the hand-off between a writing tool, a spreadsheet tool and an editor, which is usually where an afternoon disappears. Coding comes from the CodeBuddy toolchain the product grew out of, so a small change to a script does not need a second subscription. The model is selectable per task, so cost and latency can be traded against quality. The platform also states ISO 27001, SOC 2 and China's MLPS Level 3 certification, with data stored in-country — often the line that decides a procurement review.

Where Claude Cowork is stronger

Cowork's advantage is the quality of the plan. It inherits the agent architecture of Claude Code: the work is broken into steps, sub-agents run in parallel where the task allows, and the plan is shown before files start changing. Long documents are where this shows — a folder of PDFs, a set of contracts, a year of meeting notes. Output arrives as a working file with formulas or formatting, not as text to be pasted somewhere else.

The second advantage is the connector library. Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, Microsoft 365, Slack, Notion, Figma, Asana and Linear are all reachable directly. Where no connector exists, Claude in Chrome can use the browser, and screen control is kept as a last resort for desktop applications that expose nothing else. File access runs inside an isolated virtual machine on your own machine, permission is requested per application, and any step can be stopped. That is a more defensible default than an open folder.

Where each one falls short

WorkBuddy is Chinese-first. The interface, documentation and support are built for a domestic audience, and English-language coverage is thin. Its deepest integrations are Tencent's own, so a team living in Google Workspace or Slack gains much less from it. Model choice is a trade as well: output quality moves with whichever model is selected, and a long agent run costs far more of the monthly allowance than a chat exchange.

Claude Cowork has no free tier. It is available on paid Claude plans only, and the work it does consumes capacity faster than ordinary chat does. It is not straightforward to buy or use from mainland China, and data is processed outside the region, which rules it out for a lot of regulated work. It is also still labelled a research preview, so behaviour can change between releases, and the desktop app has to stay open while a task runs.

How to decide

Give both the same task this week: a real folder of PDFs that has to become a spreadsheet with a summary row. That single job separates them faster than any feature list, because it exercises file access, extraction and output formatting in one go. One afternoon of testing tells you more than a table of claims.

For a team, decide in this order: which ecosystem the files already live in, then where the data is allowed to go, then capability. The agent that can reach the existing files without an export step usually wins by the second week, whatever the benchmark said on the first. Budget is better compared per seat actually used than per seat available, since capacity on both is sized for heavy users.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Cowork free?

No. It is available on paid Claude plans only, and it is still labelled a research preview, so the feature set can change between releases.

Does Claude Cowork write code?

Not as its main job — that is Claude Code. Cowork will edit a code file it can see, but its workflow is built around documents, spreadsheets and research rather than a repository.

Can WorkBuddy work without Tencent apps?

Yes. It reads and writes local files and connects to third-party services such as Feishu, DingTalk and Canva, but the deepest integration is with Tencent's own products.

Which one handles local files better?

Both read and write folders you authorise. Cowork runs inside an isolated virtual machine and shows a plan before changing anything; WorkBuddy adds a standalone file browser and batch operations. The difference is auditing, not access.

Can I use Claude Cowork in mainland China?

Not straightforwardly. Anthropic's services are not offered there, and data residency requirements usually rule it out for company work. WorkBuddy is the practical option in that case.

Do both need a desktop app?

For local file work, yes. WorkBuddy can also be driven from the WeCom side panel or a mini program, and Cowork has a web beta, but neither reaches your own folders without the desktop app.
