What Software download is
FossHub is a catalogue, not a file host. It describes free and open-source programs, from browsers, media players, archivers, backup tools, security utilities and developer tools to game emulators, across 44 categories and roughly 540 listings, and links each one to the publisher’s own download page. Version pages keep the filenames and recorded hashes of older releases so a specific build can be identified, though the file itself still comes from the publisher. The site launched in 2013 and has always positioned itself against download portals that wrap installers in adware: its stated aim is connections to open-source projects free of spyware, adware and bundled extras. Some of that has changed recently. As of 24 September 2026 advertising on the site is paused, FossHub no longer hosts files itself, and there is no publisher hosting account or payout programme. Listings are editorial rather than paid, and the site is careful to say a listing is neither a partnership nor a safety guarantee.
Best for
- Finding the official download page for a well-known open-source app
- Checking which version a project last published
- Replacing a download portal that wraps installers in adware
Not ideal for
- Archiving an installer for long-term storage, since nothing is hosted
- One-click downloads: every link leaves the site
Pros
- Points at the publisher instead of a re-hosted mirror
- Version pages record filenames and hashes for older builds
- Category structure makes browsing a niche tool type quick
Cons
- No files hosted here, so availability depends on the publisher
- Catalogue is small next to general download portals
- No ratings or user discussion on listings
Pricing in detail
Free to browse and free to download, because FossHub does not serve the files: it links to the publisher, whose own licence and price apply. There are no accounts, no paid listings and no publisher payout programme, and advertising has been paused since 24 September 2026. The catalogue mixes open-source software with freeware, so check each product’s licence: free to download is not the same as free for commercial use.
