What Folio Wiki is
Folio is an open-source team wiki that stores content in Git. Pages are Markdown files in a repository, so history, review and access control come from the version control system rather than a proprietary permission layer, and the wiki can be self-hosted. It supports live editing, tables, AI agents and public sites, which puts it in the same conversation as Confluence or Notion for teams that want their documentation versioned like code. The limits are the mirror image of its strengths: Git-based storage assumes someone is comfortable with repositories, the ecosystem is small compared with established wikis, and self-hosting means you own backups, upgrades and uptime. Pages can be edited in the browser without cloning the repository, so non-technical contributors are not locked out, and a public site can be published from the same repository. Tables and attachments cover most internal documentation needs.
Best for
- Engineering teams that want docs versioned like code
- Organisations that must self-host internal documentation
- Public documentation published from the same source
Not ideal for
- Non-technical teams with no one to run a repository
- Organisations wanting a large plugin ecosystem
Pros
- Every change is a commit, so history is complete
- Self-hosting keeps content in-house
- Markdown pages stay portable
Cons
- Assumes familiarity with Git
- Small ecosystem and community
- You own backups, upgrades and uptime
Pricing in detail
The project is open source and free to self-host, with cost limited to the server and the time spent maintaining it. A hosted option exists for teams that do not want to run infrastructure, billed per workspace or per seat depending on the plan. Because self-hosting is free, the real comparison is hosting plus maintenance against the hosted subscription.
