What RunwayML is
Runway is a video generation and editing suite built on its own models. The core product is text-to-video and image-to-video: you describe a shot or supply a still and get a short clip, with controls for camera motion, duration and style. Around that sit editing tools — inpainting, background removal, frame interpolation, motion tracking — so a clip can be fixed rather than regenerated from scratch. The company positions the work as real-world simulation rather than only creative video, and the same models are sold to studios and enterprises. Everything runs in the browser on Runway's servers; there is no local deployment. Credits are consumed per generation and the cost varies with resolution and length, which makes budgeting less predictable than a flat subscription. Free credits are one-off, so evaluation is time-boxed. A separate set of tools covers lip sync and character performance, which matters when a generated shot has to match existing footage.
Best for
- Short conceptual clips for pitches and storyboards
- Image-to-video where you already have a strong still
- Fixing a generated shot with inpainting instead of regenerating
Not ideal for
- Long-form video with dialogue and synchronised sound
- Teams that need predictable per-month output for a fixed budget
Pros
- Generation and editing tools sit in one workspace
- Image-to-video preserves the look of a reference still
- Camera and motion controls are more granular than prompt-only tools
Cons
- Credits are consumed unpredictably across resolutions
- Free allowance is one-off rather than monthly
- Clips are short and audio has to be added separately
Pricing in detail
Plans are billed monthly or annually and differ by credit allowance, resolution and watermark removal; annual billing lowers the monthly equivalent. Credits are spent per generation, and higher resolution or longer clips consume more, so the same plan yields different output depending on settings. The free tier is a one-time credit grant rather than a recurring allowance, which means it is for evaluation only. Enterprise pricing is quoted separately.
