What Midjourney is
Midjourney is an independent research lab whose image model turns text prompts into illustrations, concept art and photorealistic renders. You submit a prompt in the web app at midjourney.com or through the original Discord bot, and the model returns a set of variations that can be upscaled, edited, or reused as references for the next round. Control comes from parameters appended to the prompt rather than from sliders: aspect ratio, stylisation strength, variation between the four initial options, negative prompts, and style or character reference images. Recent versions add in-app editing, higher-resolution rendering, and a public profile with a feed for browsing other users' work. There is no free plan and no trial — every user needs an active subscription, and membership is metered in fast GPU hours rather than a fixed image count. Standard and above add unlimited relaxed-mode generation at lower priority; Pro and Mega add stealth mode, which keeps images out of the public gallery. Commercial use is included for paying subscribers, and companies above a revenue threshold are required to hold Pro or Mega.
Best for
- Concept art and mood boards where visual style matters most
- Marketing and social visuals that need a distinctive look
- Iterating on one idea across many variations
Not ideal for
- Anything that has to run without a paid subscription
- Layouts that depend on accurate in-image typography
Pros
- Consistently strong aesthetic output with little prompt tuning
- Style and character references keep a look consistent across a set
- Unlimited relaxed-mode generation on Standard and above
Cons
- No free tier or trial; the cheapest plan is US$10 per month
- Fast GPU hours do not roll over, and extra hours cost extra
- Prompt parameters and the interface take time to learn
Pricing in detail
There is no free plan. Basic is US$10 per month for roughly 3.3 hours of fast GPU time; Standard is US$30 and adds unlimited relaxed-mode generation; Pro is US$60 and adds stealth mode; Mega is US$120 for studio-scale volume. Annual billing costs about 20% less. Fast hours are a monthly allowance that does not roll over, and extra hours are sold separately. Companies above US$1 million in annual revenue must hold Pro or Mega. Without an active subscription there is no generation at all.
