What Figma AI is

Figma is a browser-based design tool for interface work, and its AI features sit inside the existing editor rather than in a separate product. Designers build screens with components, auto layout and variables, then hand them to developers who inspect spacing, styles and assets in the same file. Figma AI adds generation of first drafts from a prompt, renaming and organising layers, replacing placeholder text with realistic content, and searching for assets across a team's files. FigJam covers whiteboarding and Figma Slides covers presentations. Real-time multiplayer editing is the feature that made it the default for product teams, and comments and prototypes keep review inside the file. The limits are that AI output is a starting point rather than production design, and the editor is heavy in the browser on large files. Offline work is limited, which is a real constraint for teams on unreliable connections.

Best for

  • Product teams designing and reviewing interfaces together
  • Handing designs to developers without exporting assets separately
  • Design systems shared across several products

Not ideal for

  • Print layout and heavy vector illustration
  • Teams that cannot work in a browser tab

Pros

  • Multiplayer editing removes file-version confusion
  • Components and variables scale a design system
  • Developer inspection lives in the same file

Cons

  • Large files can be slow in the browser
  • AI drafts are starting points, not finished design
  • Seat pricing adds up for large organisations

Pricing in detail

The free plan covers a small number of files, limited version history and a capped amount of AI usage. Paid plans are billed per editor per month, with viewers free on some tiers, and differ by file history, shared libraries, private projects and admin controls; AI features are metered separately and consumed faster by generation than by text tools. Enterprise adds SSO and advanced permissions at quoted prices. Because editors are billed and viewers are not, cost depends on how many people actually edit.
