Best AI Tools for Coding
For a full assistant-led workflow, Cursor and Windsurf are the two AI-native editors most teams evaluate. Claude Code and GitHub Copilot cover assistant-to-agent work with different levels of supervision, and Replit AI moves the whole loop into the browser, which suits prototypes and teaching.
The shortlist
-
Cursor Freemium
Code editor built around AI agents that read the repository, edit several files and run commands.
-
Windsurf Freemium
AI-native code editor built around agents that edit multiple files and run commands, with local and cloud runs.
-
Claude Code Premium
Anthropic terminal coding agent that reads a repository, edits files and runs commands, asking before risky steps.
-
GitHub Copilot Freemium
GitHub coding assistant with inline suggestions, chat and an agent that opens pull requests from issues.
-
Replit AI Freemium
Browser development environment whose agent builds and deploys working apps from a description, no local setup.
How these tools differ
It helps to sort coding tools by how much of the loop they take over.
Inline completion. Suggests the next line or block while you type. The assistant never sees the whole task, and you stay in control. Most tools in this list do this well, and it is where most people start.
Assistant-led editing. You describe a change, the tool reads the project and proposes edits across files. This is where Cursor and Windsurf differ from a plain extension: they index the codebase so the proposal fits your actual structure.
Agents. The tool carries out a task — writing files, running commands, running tests — and reports back. Claude Code and GitHub Copilot operate in this range with varying degrees of autonomy.
What to evaluate
Test on your own repository, not a demo project. Three things separate the tools in practice:
- How they handle a large codebase. Ask a question whose answer is not in the file you have open. If it cannot find it, it cannot change it safely.
- How easy the diff is to review. The faster a tool writes code, the more your process depends on reading the diff. A tool that makes review hard will produce changes you accept without understanding.
- What they do when the task is ambiguous. Good behaviour is asking, or making a small reversible change — not inventing a large one.
Practical advice
Keep changes small and commits frequent, and let your test suite be the gate. None of these tools verifies its own work, which means the review step is the part of the workflow you should invest in most.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best AI coding tool?
For assistant-led multi-file work, Cursor and Windsurf. For inline completion inside an existing setup, GitHub Copilot. It depends on how much of the loop you want to hand over.
Can AI write production code?
It can produce code that passes tests. Whether it belongs in production depends on your review process, not on the model.
Are free AI coding tools available?
Yes. Lingma and Trae offer free tiers, and several editors include a free quota of assistant requests.
